Bill of Materials: How Order Time Stands Out - Order Time | Inventory

Written by Michael DeFelice | Dec 28, 2020 9:15:00 PM

No matter the industry you’re in, it is crucial to remain organized, and efficient to manage all customers, orders, and overall quality control. When manufacturing, using a bill of materials, or BOM, provides you with a recipe of all components and raw materials used to produce a single unit of your finished product.

Utilizing an advanced bill of materials with routing steps allows you to view cost breakdowns, markups, and margins with unlimited detail. By using Order Time Inventory, you can streamline your business and manage all workflows with the click of a button. How does Order Time handle bill of materials differently? Keep reading to find out.

Split your BOM into Steps

If you use QuickBooks Premier and/or QuickBooks Enterprise, then you know that item assembly represents finished goods times. This means that you specify the components, including inventory items

and their quantities, while service items, other charges, and non-inventory items are not allowed. Unfortunately, QuickBooks does not include routing, nor does it allow you to change the components on each build.

However, Order Time’s Bill of Materials gives you the power to specify which of your existing inventory parts are finished goods, which are components, and their units of measure. By working with your existing inventory parts, non-inventory parts, services, and other charge items, BOM’s allow you to break up your bill into smaller steps throughout production into multiple processes.

Tracking Locations

Work orders use the bill of materials to build complex assemblies to maximize production. To add convenience, Order Time gives you the tools to track the location of the BOM of the work order so that you know where your products are every step of the way. This feature has proven to be extremely helpful for sub-contractors who need the ability to modify components and know status updates throughout the entire production process.

Nested Bill of Materials

If your finished product requires multiple steps or sub-assemblies to build your top-level product later, then a nested bill of materials is for you.

A nested bill of material provides a display of all items required to make your finished product and their sub-components. This represents a parent-child relationship, in which the structure is composed similar to a tree with several layers. You can expedite your work order forms greatly by documenting most of the likely steps in your everyday work process ahead of time.

Disassembly Benefits

Unfortunately, customers may choose to return or cancel their orders. When this happens, it is wise to have an automated and efficient system in place to handle all breaking down and disassembly processes.

Order Time features disassembly benefits that allow you to simply break down any returned or cancelled order back into its base components. This process is fairly similar to that of the work order, but in reverse. Whereas with a work order you are compiling components to build the finished good, the disassembly process undoes the process by putting it back into its original parts.

Drill Down Features

You can use Order Time’s drill down feature to create work orders for components in a work order that are also in the bill of materials. This situation is often referred to as an “Indented BOM”, which means that sub-assemblies need to be built before the final assembly or product can be completed.

This feature lets you link multiple work orders together with one initial work order, simplifying the process of creating work orders for any sub-assemblies. The drill down feature will automatically create a chain of work orders that include a drill down reference number to allow for easier filtering throughout the process.

Additional Benefits

As if Order Time’s extensive list of features and benefits isn’t enough, the automated inventory system includes additional benefits when dealing with a bill of materials. You can create different versions, configure BOM’s like computer parts, and even link work orders to sale orders for systematic processing and seamlessness throughout your business.
